Guidelines for Graphic Designers
Software and File types
Final design work should be in PSD, PNG, or AI file format
(Please no Quark or Freehand files)
All layers should be intact and labeled clearly by content
or function
Each different page or section should have its own file with
only the appropriate layers. In Photoshop, the different pages
can alternatively be placed in layer folders.
Versions of software should be established based on the project
needs before production begins.
All files should have the appropriate extensions (for example,
“.psd”, “.png”, etc)
Comps should be in JPG format (all layers flattened for the specific
page)
Dealing with Fonts
Denote in comps text that should be displayed as images and that
which can be displayed by html text.
All fonts should be converted to line, outlines or images in
the final design work. (If fonts are required the layers should
be labeled with the names of the fonts used and font files for PC
format should be provided)
All font layers should be doubled; one rasterized or outlined
layer and one layer containing the type (any unique fonts being
used must be included and specified)
Be aware that it is not always possible to show HTML text with
kerning or leading (it may or may not work on certain browsers)
thus it is best practice to minimize kerning and leading of type
that will be html text.
Body or data driven content should be in web friendly fonts.
These are: Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, Helvetica.
Any buttons or action graphics should have articulated states in
separate layers (while usually just “over”, states include
“over”, “up”, “down”, “over
while down”)
Sizing of the canvas...
It is usually a requirement that web designs work at an 800 X
600 screen resolution. For designs to meet this requirement, the
design should be executed at 750 pixels wide.
The design canvas should expand to at least 1024 X 768 and illustrate
the design in a higher resolution format.
Dealing with functionality and extras
Annotate and special function menus or buttons (Drop Downs, Expanding
Navigation)
(for PSD files)Any extra notes or comments to the design should
be included in the file using the note tool in Photoshop.
